On Truth and Reconciliation Day, we paused to reflect on our shared history and reaffirm our commitment to meaningful action in support of Indigenous communities. At Scarfone Hawkins LLP, we believe reconciliation is about creating opportunities and building futures rooted in dignity and belonging.
We are proud to share that on September 18, our client Brantford Native Housing (BNH) broke ground on a transformative affordable housing development on West Street in Brantford. This milestone project will bring 18 much-needed supportive housing units to urban and rural Indigenous households including families, seniors, and individuals living with disabilities with construction beginning this fall.
The timing of this ceremony, so close to National Truth and Reconciliation Day, was no coincidence. As BNH shared, “This project stands as a living monument to our collective commitment to true reconciliation for Indigenous peoples. It represents the kind of progress and partnership that are crucial for building a future rooted in justice, respect, and shared purpose.”
BNH has been serving the Brantford and Brant County region since 1994, providing safe, affordable housing and culturally appropriate support services for Indigenous people. Their work addresses systemic barriers and promotes healing through housing stability and community engagement.
This achievement was made possible through the support of partners and funders, including Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), NICHI – National Indigenous Collaborative Housing Inc., and the City of Brantford, as well as the dedication of BNH’s Board, Elders, staff, and community leaders.
Jeff Teal and his team are honoured to provide both solicitor and litigation services for this initiative. Participating in projects like this demonstrates our firm’s commitment to reconciliation through meaningful action and our support for organizations that create lasting impact.
In the words of Alma Arguello, Executive Director at Brantford Native Housing:
“We extend our heartfelt thanks to Scarfone Hawkins for their unwavering support, affirming our commitment to meaningful action for Indigenous communities.”
Here’s to building homes, strengthening communities, and shaping a future where everyone belongs.
