“My parents were entrepreneurs so I grew up learning the art of business first. Much like law, success in that ‘artform’ requires a tremendous amount of creativity and dedication, skills which I now apply to my practice of corporate and commercial law.” - Sam Patel

Sam Patel received an immersive education in building businesses from an early age. His family immigrated to Canada from India in the early 1980s. Upon arrival, Sam’s parents wasted no time in pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams. They taught Sam the value of hard work, building many successful businesses along the way.

It’s Sam’s family roots in business that attracted him to corporate and commercial law. After being called to the bar, Sam forged his own path in the legal profession. Inspired by his entrepreneurial parents, he chose to start his own legal practice. This allowed him to gain diverse experience as a consultant for several law firms in the GTA. These early years gave Sam an education par excellence in running his own business. Not to mention helping other business owners with a variety of complex legal needs.

Combining Technical Expertise With A Passion for Business

Sam is always looking for ways to learn and grow as a professional. After running his practice, he went to work at an eminent firm in Burlington. Here, Sam benefited from the mentorship of a principal with over 50 years’ experience. It was a chance to explore the many facets of commercial, business and real estate law.

During his time with the Burlington firm, Sam found himself routinely facilitating 7-figure business acquisition and disposition transactions from start to finish for various private businesses. His clients spanned a wide range of sectors including service, retail, manufacturing, distribution, restaurants, pharmacies, dental clinics, medical clinics, and law firms. Sam also gained extensive experience in the following areas: managing commercial real estate purchase, sale, and refinance transactions; representing lenders and borrowers on commercial lending transactions; negotiating with landlords, lenders, suppliers, franchisors; drafting and negotiating highly-involved shareholder, partnership, joint-venture, service, licensing, distribution, and independent contractor agreements; and advising clients on a diverse range of business, commercial real estate, and financing matters. These were the daily duties that helped shape the lawyer Sam is today.

Eventually, Sam became aware of an opportunity to continue growing his career. It came in the form of joining the elite commercial and business law team at Scarfone Hawkins. Sam is excited to bring his years of experience to serve Scarfone Hawkins clients in complex corporate, commercial, financing, and real estate matters.

When Sam isn’t practicing law, he is often pursuing his passion for public speaking. This passion has taken him to many conferences and events across the world. Sam is also highly engaged in youth mentorship. He primarily works with young people, providing career guidance and skills development.
